What brought you into the world of communications?
To cut a long story short – the catalyst for my entire career was the Mexico 1986 football World Cup and a crunch game between England and Poland.
England HAD to win to stay in the competition so I was allowed to stay up late to watch it, a perfect excuse for a 10-year-old night owl. I didn’t even like football at the time but I was captivated by the way the commentator (the legendary Barry Davies) described the action and told the story of the game.
That was it. I wanted to become a sports journalist so I earned a journalism degree that helped me land a job on my local paper. As I honed my craft, I ended up getting into hard news, including crime and politics. I eventually moved into the world of corporate communications where I help tell the stories of businesses.
If you were stuck on a desert island and you could bring three people to join you, dead or alive, real or fictitious, who would you pick?
This is an easy one for me – legendary Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough would be my first choice because he’d be entertaining, controversial, interesting and full of anecdotes.
John Lennon – to play the soundtrack and have a decent debate with Cloughie.
And John F. Kennedy - to keep the peace between the other two, and to learn about his rise in politics and what it was like to be a world leader amid the threat of nuclear war.
Describe your ideal weekend
My ideal weekend would be spent with my family meandering around a gorgeous European city – soaking in the smells, sights and sounds. Love learning about other cultures, trying different foods and getting to grips with different languages.
Favourite film, book and podcast?
Such a tough one to answer but, as a horror fan, my favourite film of all time would have to be Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ or John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’. Love a bit of suspense and sci-fi with my scares.
My favourite book is Salem’s Lot by Stephen King and then, just to mix it up, my favourite podcast at the moment is the Garibaldi Red podcast which is dedicated to the trials and tribulations of Nottingham Forest.
